After talking with the developers, it seems the issue has been fixed in upstream Zephyr.

A quick followup, I compared the RTT config files of ncs 1.5 and 1.6 and found the issue.
It seems the config has been updated the Zephyr defines not implemented.

On the picture you can see a file version 3.30 which is shipped in 1.6 and the version 2.52h shipped in 1.5.x
