nRF5 SDK and NCS (nRF Connect SDK) are two standalone SDKs, to be used by themselves.

You do not need to use NCS, and you can choose which SDK you want to use and which will be the best fit for your project. We do, however, recommend using NCS, as it will be the platform we continue to develop, and will receive new features and updates regularly. So if you are developing a new application from start, it is a good SDK to use. Especially if you want new features, such as new Mesh models that are not in any of the SDKs already.

The nRF5 SDK is a mature solution which will continue to be supported, but it will not be the focus regarding new features.

Best regards,
