&lt;p&gt;Also, we have seen strange behavior with the build system, when the path is too long. To which path did you install the SDK environment?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;When opening the project via &amp;quot;Open nRF Connect SDK project&amp;quot; in SES, can you please take a screenshot of the settings that you use? I.e. board name, build directory, etc.&lt;/p&gt;

Building the mqtt_simple from NCS v1.6.1 does not provide any errors on my side using Segger Embedded Studio Nordic Edition 5.50c.&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Please make sure to use an official tag of NCS, with NCS 1.6.1 being latest, but the release candidate for 1.7.0 is also available. The latest/master branch tends to be more unstable as this may have new features under testing.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;How did you install NCS? Please try with the &lt;a href="https://www.nordicsemi.com/Products/Development-tools/nRF-Connect-for-desktop"&gt;Toolchain Manager found in the nRF Connect for Desktop software.&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;You will need to port you application from nRF5 SDK to nRF Connect SDK to use the example I linked, there is a big difference between the two SDK. &lt;a href="https://developer.nordicsemi.com/nRF_Connect_SDK/doc/1.6.1/nrf/introduction.html#about-the-ncs"&gt;The nRF Connect SDK is constantly evolving&lt;/a&gt;, and is more open source which allows users to easily contribute via Github. E.g. to implement newer Bluetooth 5 features, one must to nRF Connect SDK in order to develop using Bluetooth 5.
