In that case, this jtag here is a better choice. Parallel programming of the nRF5x series at very low costs.

it's probably worth a couple of hours looking into the OpenOCD support for FTDI and SWD, there's some it seems, may be enough to get you going and of course it would have to interoperate with your other software on the FTDI. I suspect however support's not that advanced and it will be hard enough that ... you may as well get a segger or some other commercial product.

Yes, sorry, I was referring to using FTDI232 and SWD. I want this to be how we program our devices in production. What're your guys thoughts? If it is safer/easier I'd rather just get a SEGGER programmer and stick to programming that way.

I though OP was asking about programming over UART no mention of SWD.

I thought OpenOCD had some support for FTDI 232 and SWD although last time I looked it seemed it was going to require more than a little work to get it going.

Not by default. Only with Serial version of the DFU. For that you need to find away to flash the serial DFU in first.
