I am not able to use the bluetooth: HCI low power UART because I want to be able to make changes to nrf52 code. Is there an alternative example?

I suggest looking at the NCS sample nRF9160: LTE Sensor Gateway. This uses Bluetooth: HCI low power UART running on the nRF52840, which send information to the nRF9160 over UART. Note that this sample is based on using the Thingy:52 and its default sample, but can be a good starting point to learn. Have a look at my colleague Håkon's answer here.

I have to say I am new to the nrf sdk and I am using 1.7.0. I am trying to achieve sending bluetooth message from the nrf52840 to the nrf9160 with UART communication. I am using the following examples for this: Peripheral_uart on the nrf52840 and lpuart on the nrf9160. I have tested and the bluetooth part is working I am just not receiving anything on the nrf9160.

Hello,

The case you are linking to is fairly outdated. What version of nRF Connect SDK are you working on? Can you please elaborate more on what you are trying to achieve with the communication? Please note that the nRF52840 acts as a board controller for the nRF9160DK, and that not all functionality is available. I recommend reading the Working with nRF9160DK.
