Unfortunately, we do not have a specific guide on how to go from the driver to the GNSS API directly, but if you look at the GPS sample, this one uses the GNSS API directly:

https://github.com/nrfconnect/sdk-nrf/blob/master/samples/nrf9160/gps/src/main.c

Application behavior should start the GNSS after CSCON indicates a inactive/idle link.
Also, should there be any known issues if we would start to use SDK v1.7.0 instead of current v1.6.0 as we are not yet using revision B1 and mFW 1.3.x? Do you recommend to use v1.6.0 or v1.7.0 with mFW 1.2.3?
You can find our known issues here: https://developer.nordicsemi.com/nRF_Connect_SDK/doc/latest/nrf/known_issues.html

We do recommend using mfw v1.3.x with newer SDKs, both because this is what we test the SDK with and for you to utilize new features fully. Using older mfw v1.2.x will work, but it is up to you to verify the behavior in your application.

Kind regards,

Håkon
