 Has anyone else had this problem ?

&lt;p&gt;~\button\nrf52840dk_nrf52840.overlay&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Using a text editor I created this overlay file where SES wants the overlay file. Then I reloaded the nrf project and cleaned.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;At that point the overlay file worked as expected.&lt;/p&gt;
