There is a DFU master project zip in near the bottom of the blog post. Please note that although it is included in the post, this project does not come from our SDK team, so it is not "SDK grade tested". It was written as a start help for a customer, and it was published in case it was useful for other customers as well. You can give it a try, and see if it works for you.

Note that it is written for an nRF52 as the master, but you can try to translate it into your ESP8266 controller, as you said.
