The way to use that dongle is,

First plug it in, and then press the reset button, then the red light will glow.

If you plug this out and back in at this stage, the dongle will return to the previous program. So the red light will not glow.

when you see red light glowing, that's when you have to program. Always.

Also note that there are many programs for dongles that cannot be detected by the OS when plugging in. So just because you cannot detect the dongle, it doesn't mean that you lost the dongle. It just means that the dongle is running a program when plugged in. If you want to reprogram it, just press the reset button and program it again.

What do you mean? The dongle is not powered when it is not plugged in, so that does not help. You need to push the button while it is plugged in (just press and release it).

Next you program it. What do you want to do with it? If you for instance want to use it with nRF Connect for Desktop Bluetooth, then simply open it and it will ask if you want to program the dongle, and then select "Yes". If you want to program it with something else, you can use the programmer app. Remember that if the dongle is not detected that indicates you need to push the reset button, as explained earlier in this thread.

You only need to push the button when you need to program it and the firmware that currently runs on it does not have the DFU trigger library. This should not be something you need to do very often.

Do you have any idea of bootloader. I am able to go in the bootloader option for the dead dongle, by pressing the reset button before plugging in. Now what do i need to do next. Because when I unplug and plug it again in the normal way(like not keep presingthe reset button whilke inserting) the RED LED is not glowing.

You need to press the sideways button in that case. There is not really much more to say

As mentioned earlier in the post. I have 2 nRF52840 dongles.

One of them got dead this way, like I connected it to the nRF power profile and it asked me to program, now without pressing any button I programmed it. After a while it was not detectable on my laptop and no RED LED glowing on it. Its like completely dead.

Now I have the second controller its glowing the RED LED but I cannot take risk without knowing the actual way to program it.

Please help!

No nee to press reset button here, no. You only get this question because the existing firmware supports USB DFU. Simply say yes and you will get the firmware you need.

If the existing application firmware on the dongle does not include the USB DFU trigger library, then yes. you need to press the button for programming. However, if the firmware currently running do include this library, then it is not required. Pressing the button never hurts though, and it is a universal way to enter DFU mode that always works.

I am using the nRF52840 dongle for the first time. Now when I go to the BLuetooth Low Energy Application in the nRF Connect window. It asks me that do you want to program this device (YES or NO)? What do I select here.

If I select YES do I need to press the RESET button while programming?

Yes. If you programmed a firmware that does not include the USB DFU Trigger library then the only way to enter SUB DFU mode is to press the reset button.

The thing is that this button is connected to the reset pin, and upon reset the bootloader runs and checks the RESETREAS register. If a pin reset has occurred, it will enter DFU mode.

Also the sideways button is a momentary button I believe, when I press it the button is pushed back. I dont think it is a latch action.

Hi,

Could it be that you pressed the wrong button? The reset button is the sideways button as allready mentioned, not the push button (which is marked SW1).

It's hard to believe reset button isn't working. Are you sure the dongle was plugged in USB when pressing? Are you sure you're pressing the right button? it has to be pressed side ways, not from the top.
