I am completely new to development with the nRF52DK.
Today I spent the entire day trying to set up the IDE and enviroment to make my first application, but that proved to me more of a challenge than I initially thought. First of all, what

RE: Trying to set up nRF52832, but unsure of choice of SDK and IDE.

Hi There,

I sympathise with you on this! We are also new to development with these devices and it took a bit to get our heads around how to get going.

Firstly, regarding nRF5 SDK vs nRF Connect SDK - look at this statement from Nordic. Generally for new developments you'd use the nRF Connect SDK.

Regarding the IDE to use - with the nRF Connect SDK, I'd use VS Code and the nRF Connect for VS Code Extension. Here's a blog post Nordic did in August last year about it.

To setup your environment, start by installing Visual Studio Code and adding the nRF Connect for VS Code Extension Pack. Then install the nRF Connect for Desktop software which you can then use to install the Toolchain Manager and the specific nRF Connect SDK version(s) that you need.

These guides for the nRF Connect SDK should get you going and all of the relevant documentation is here.

I think once you've determined which SDK to go with, the path to setting up and getting going becomes a lot clearer.

Hope that helps!

Cheers, Phil.
