Query on the BLE signal penetration through metal sheet

Dear Concern,

We are using nrf52840 USB dongle as one of the components in of our products. There is a chance that the device can be put inside a metal container. Right now I will need two information which are critical in our developments.

1. Can you please provide me some information on the metal sheet width vs signal strength reduction?

2. What should be the minimum clearance around the antenna?

Thanks in advance for your support.

Thanking You,

Sumit

  • Hi Sumit,

We do not have any data on this.

Any metal close to the antenna will impact the antenna impedance, in addition to reduce the signal strength. If possible there should be some opening in the metal enclosure around the antenna to reduce the impact on the strength of the received signal. This opening can be filled with a non conducting material as completely enclosing the antenna will block most of the RF signals.

    Best regards,

    Bendik
