I have gotten to the very last step of the following tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdMJQFDRoss
The issue I am facing is that when pairing the Matter device to the thread network, it appears to timeout or not successfully pair

RE: Thread device commissioning over Android CHIP tool failing

Happy to report I got it working,

After some googling, I found that there may be some issues with DNS-SD service comms and a feature named "IGMP Snooping" on Ubiquiti systems. In my router USG-3P settings (UniFi Controller), I disabled IGMP Snooping, re-flashed the light bulb accessory and it now works.

Thanks for your help with this!

I have followed the steps mention and it seems as if the network configuration is correct.

1. I confirmed the phone and RPi are on the same Wi-Fi network.

2. I confirmed the phone had obtained an IPv6 address (other than link-local).

3. Using the Android Service Browser I confirmed that _matter._tcp could be found. I also found the udp service but not sure if this matters.

4. I then used the network analyser to ping the IPv6 address shown in the above screenshot and I don't seem to get a response. I believe the grey dots on the left should be green if a response is received

I will setup an isolated Wi-Fi network from the one used above to see if there is any difference. Perhaps there is some configuration on my existing network blocking the packets.

If my understanding is correct, the light bulb device (nRF52840 DK) and the RPi OTBR are establishing a connection, as the light bulb is advertising its IPv6 address. The issue lies with the OTBR not being able to pass any packets through my LAN. Does that sound right?

Another thing I wanted to clarify/ask; in the CHIPTool, what are the two fields at the top? What should be in them and will this automatically update to the correct address once the connection is established correctly?

Kind regards,

thanks for this detailed suggestion. Yes I will try this and report back.

"It looks like the device doesn't receive any IP packets so there must be some routing issue. The usual sequence of investigation steps in such a case is:
Make sure both the RPi and the mobile phone are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Make sure the phone obtained IPv6 address (other than link-local fe80::)

Verify using Android Service Browser app that it can find a DNS-SD service with type _matter._tcp. Check that the service is advertised for the correct IPv6 address (one of the addresses assigned to the light bulb device, which can be found in the logs). Copy the adddress to the clipboard.

Use Android Network Analyzer app (or any other app that can send pings) to verify connectivity between the mobile phone and the copied IPv6 adddress. If the mobile phone can't route the packets to the light bulb device it means it somehow didn't receive router advertisement packets sent by the border router. It's worth verifying the procedure with a different Wi-Fi router in such a case."

Are you able to try these steps?

Regards,
Sigurd Hellesvik

RE: Thread device commissioning over Android CHIP tool failing

Hi Sigurd,

It appears the Matter device is connected to the OTBR. When opening OT Web GUI, I can see the 'child' device in the topology map. I am not however able to toggle the LED via the mobile phone. The mobile and the OTBR are connected to the same wireless network (WLAN).

I will attempt to get the system working using a Linux machine as the controller (commissioner) to see if I have any success with that.

From your logs, the Matter device seems to get its Thread parameters set correctly.

Is the Matter device connected to the OpenThread Border Router (OTBR)?
Are you able to use the mobile phone to toggle the LED if connected to the same wireless network as the OTBR?
