I'm using the nR5 SDK 17.1.0 and my goal is to implement a TLS client connection between a nRF52840 and an MQTT broker - I have a Wiznet 5500 set up for the TCP stack via SPI. This works well for not secure connections.

I have consulted to our security expat.

mbedTLS is a generic crypto library, so it is used to provide support for various crypto operations. Specifically, in recent nRF5 SD versions it is typically used as a backend to nrf_crypto (which provides a unified API for many crypto operations regardless of which library or HW resources that is used to do the actual number crunching)

You can check in this https://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/sdk_nrf5_v17.1.0/lib_crypto.html link.

Thanks.

Best Regards,

This information is a bit concerning because it seems that porting projects from earlier SDKs can become a hassle.

Lastly, as per my original ticket, could you inform me what mbedTLS in the externals folder is being used for in the SDK 17.1.0?

This previously seemed to pair exclusively with the IoT library, but now it seems like a left over dependency that lacks porting. Am I mistaken or is there no TLS use whatsoever in the SDK?

I am sorry for making you confused. IoT library was removed so the files are not included in recent SDK versions. SDK 16.0.0 is the latest with the IoT components.

IoT libraries of nRFSDK is same as it was before and we have currently no plan to add new features. You can use the previous features on your application.

Regarding crypto/entropy sources of nRF52840, RNG peripheral needs an entropy source. And that is available in the nRF, and is used by the SoftDevice and other libraries that need entropy ( https://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/ps_nrf52840/rng.html?cp=4_0_0_5_20 ).
