 I was initially using the LTE_BLE_Gateway sample with the NRF52840 running the hci_lpuart sample. and that appears to work well, but we want more control over 52840 chipset.

&lt;p&gt;It should be fine to use a direct UART connection between the two devices, you just need to configure this equally in both chip so they can communicate properly.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If you look at the &lt;a href="https://developer.nordicsemi.com/nRF_Connect_SDK/doc/latest/nrf/samples/peripheral/lpuart/README.html"&gt;LPUART sample&lt;/a&gt; you can see how you can implement an LPUART interface without running any higher level protocol like HCI on top, allowing you to send raw data.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
