The nRF Connect SDK also use the softdevice yes, but the version will depend automatically by the BLE features and nRF variant you are using. So you don't need to consider it the same way as before, it's automatically handled when compiling.

I can not see any recommended Soft Devices for the nRF Connect SDK - does it not use Soft Devices?

Hi,

I am not aware of any specific overview for comparison, we recommend to always use the latest, since that have the latest features, bug fixes and qualification.

If you need detailed information I recommend to first check with softdevice is supported by the chip in question, e.g. for the nRF52833:

Then click on the specification for the various supported softdevices for more information:

For instance you can find in the overview for S113:
"It supports up to four peripheral connections with an additional broadcaster role running concurrently"

While for s140 is says:
"The S140 SoftDevice supports running up to twenty connections concurrently"
