According to the schematic (https://content.arduino.cc/assets/NANO33BLE_V4.0_sch.pdf), the green LED is P0.16, which corresponds to the "led1" defined in the board itself:

If you build blinky for the "arduino_nano_33_ble" board, it will setup the ledX to point to the corresponding GPIOs.

To use "led1" instead of the default led0, change this line:

PS: the nano33 has a nrf52840 device on it, not a nrf5340 as you've added as the runner args.

yes i had this set up before except with rest attached, however with reset removed it seems to make no difference. I think really what I am trying to understand is what would be the correct board.cmake, .yaml, and arduino_nano_ble_defconfig file.

Unless there are any other things that I am missing or could have wrong. I seem to be able to flash the blinky program to the arduino but it does not do anything.

Yes, and connecting the correct SWD pins from the Arduino Nano BLE to the debug out port on the nRF52DK should be sufficient. Note: The voltage supported by external debugging/programming is 3.0 V.

on modifying the board files i do not wish to flash to the board using the arduino bootloader. I wish to flash using j link and jephyr. I really want to try this out as experimentation for a custom board.

i copied the wrong file, my apoligies. This is my current board.cmake still seems to be having trouble

Just to clarify, are you using the Arduino Nano 33 BLE or the Arduino Nano 33 IoT?

If you are using the Arduino Nano 33 BLE why do you need to modify board files? zephyr\boards\arm\arduino_nano_33_ble

What is the reason for using the nRF5340 as device in modified board.cmake file?

 board_runner_args(jlink "--device=nrf5340_xxaa_app" "--speed=4000")
