I got it working using v2.6.0 plus the fixes in PR: https://github.com/nrfconnect/sdk-nrf/pull/14512. I can now send audio from my device to my Android phone using the Android built in Recorder app.

Interesting, thanks for the info! Ultimately I'm looking for a solution where I can receive a BIS and do some processing on the received data. I'm having access to a Samsung S23, hoping the pending upgrade to OneUI 6.1 and later on to Android 15 can give some more possibilities! I'll ping you in a bit!

I have not yet, I'm able to pair the device with bidirectional mode enabled, and it shows up on the Android phone as a headset and the Android AudioManager sees it in the list of microphones, but when I try and record something the Android phone drops the link for some unknown reason. I'm now trying new firmware version 2.6.0 since I've been told this may fix some bugs involving the Android phone. Ping me again in a few weeks to see if I have any updates.

Hi,

I am not sure about Pixel 7 capabilities, but it is not common for Android phone to be broadcast receiver. Usually, this role is dedicated to earbuds and headsets.

I was able to pair an nrf5340 audio devkit running as a headset to a Google Pixel 8 phone running Android 14, by enabling the experimental "LE Audio" feature on the paired device settings. Here you can see me stream audio from a youtube video to the earbuds connected to the nrf5340 audio devkit, which means Android 14 now supports the LC3 codec.

Here's the bluetooth pairing dialog, I had to select this device, select settings, then enable "LE Audio". I also had to use developer options to "Enable LE audio toggle in Device Details". Now I just have to figure out how to make it work the other way around with the nrf5340 acting as a microphone. More details here: https://lovettsoftware.com/#posts/nrf5340_pixel/.

Has anyone tested if Pixel 7 (which i understand is the only mobile that -experimentally at least- supports BLE audio), with NRF5340 audio dk in BIS mode?

I am interested in a scenario where nrf5340 audio dk works as gateway (audio source), streaming PC audio, and a mobile can connect without any need for prior configuration (ideally, i can pre-program once the nrf5340 audio dk as gateway in BIS mode, and many pixel 7 phones can connect without any modification).

Currently, we do not have recommendation for Android device which you could use for testing.

We also tried the bidirectional mode to send audio data back to the Pixel 7 but to no success so far... We tried 2.2.0 of nRF Connect SDK. Would you recommend another android device for testing?

Hi Pavel,

Restriction is most probably not on nRF5340 audio side as there is a way to support bidirectional communication using CONFIG_STREAM_BIDIRECTIONAL. The restriction might be on the way how Android handles this on their side.

Is there anything I can do to implement it?

I was trying to use bidirectional transfer for CIS in nRF Connect SDK v2.2.0-rc1, and I can verify that data being sent back to Android, but on Android part device is not detected as an audio input, only output (I used getDevices(GET_DEVICES_INPUTS) method of AudioManager)

Not really, you just have to set "Enable Bluetooth LE audio" in developers options, restart your phone and that's it:

If it won't work check for System update, but it should be fine. I was able to connect to a CIS headset with no issues

we're also trying to use the nRF5340 to send data to / and recieve from. Do you have any specific Pixel 7 version or did it require a special setup like custom or beta firmware?

I tried it again and was able to connect in a CIS mode, thank you. For my application I'm only interested in using nRF5340 as an audio source and Android phone as an audio sink. So I'm figuring out how to set it up at the moment

Hi Pavel,

You cannot see the gateway in CIS mode because gateway scans for headsets, does not advertise. However, in BIS mode gateway advertises to other headsets and they should be able to find it and connect to it.

It is phone that should act as a gateway. Why do you want to use nRF5340 audio DK as a gateway when connecting to the phone?

Thank you, Dejan! It makes sense. Still surprised there's no detection at all in CIS mode. Fingers crossed, the new Pixel 7 will support LE Audio and allows us to test nRF5340 Audio DK in the real life scenario

Hi,

Regarding LE Audio support, it might be the case that mobile vendor has not enabled the LE Audio feature in your phone (in public release) and nRF Connect App reports that.
