I was able to get it with the #define NRF_FPRINTF_FLAG_AUTOMATIC_CR_ON_LF_ENABLED 0 define issue and using nrfjprog to flash the board.

I'm using SES 6.34a

What SES version are you using?

I recommend using the version we used for the release testing.

E.g. for nRF5-SDK v17.1.0, we used SES 5.42a

With the Target Download option, using either debug or release build, i now get no output at all

Yes, try that, alternatively, "build & debug" and abort debug session.
