Instead of using Git Clone, can you try to download the v3.0.1 version from here and add it to $HOME/.nrfconnect-apps/local as described here?

This almost worked. I was able to successfully follow all the steps you provided, but when I tried to launch the BLE v3.0.1 I got this error message:

If I click "OK" I just see a white screen.

I do have the ble package.json in the pc-nrfconnect-ble folder. How can I verify that as valid?

git clone https://github.com/NordicSemiconductor/pc-nrfconnect-ble
cd pc-nrfconnect-ble
git checkout v3.0.1
