Since I want to use a beacon board, I assume the ESB app needs to sit on the S110 softdevice.
I added S110 to the ESB TX example code (esb_ptx_ack_payload_pca10028) in SDK 9.0.0.
The nRF Beacon kit contains a normal nRF51822 chip, so it does not need a softdevice rather than a nRF51-DK kit. The beacon kit ships however with preprogrammed S110 softdevice and a bootloader, but if you connect a programmer to the Beacon kit, you can erase that softdevice and bootloader and flash whatever you want.

ESB is a proprietary protocol and can not use BLE softdevice. You should just flash your ESB code to the nRF51822 as standalone, without softdevice.
