The patch you link to will not be included.
It is a hotfix which you can add yourself in needed.

The same issue will be fixed in another way in a future release, related to https://github.com/tejlmand/fw-nrfconnect-zephyr-1/commit/7063995bae0288f01fdc6994a3afe038753eb117

I've noticed that this is a problem in version 2.1.3 of the SDK as well. The patch works:

If your project is dependent on child image build order, this might impact the build.

I guess that it should not cause any problems, but I can not know for certain.

Still for the first question, can you confirm if this workaround will not affect anyother project / board. Here project, I mean firmware without multicore image and board I mean other boards like NRF5240 or NRF5240 Dongle or NRF9160.

It will force mcuboot to build last for all projects.

This patch is a workaround of the issue.
Our developers will investigate to find a root issue here before making a real patch.

We have an internal tracker for this issue, but I am not able to share much details from it.

However, it looks like zephyr will add a new way of building multiple images called sysbuild.
This might be the better way to do things, but I do not think we have any samples using it in the nRF Connect SDK yet.

dfu_application.zip is just an zip-file wil three things:

signed binary for app core
signed binary for net core
yml file to describe these

And the build system will use Imgtool to generate these signed binary from the built hex files.

In that case, I would try to sign with these parameters:

Private key: You should add this to your project manually before production, so might as well do it now. See MCUBoot Custom Key with SMP Server for my unofficial example on this.
Hex file: I guess this would be build/netcore/zephyr/merged.hex

"Fork the nRF Connect SDK to add a netcore image in the same way as for example zephyr/samples/bluetooth/hci_rpmsg is added when CONFIG_BT is set."

The rpmsg samples are handeled uniquely in the build system. See if (CONFIG_NCS_INCLUDE_RPMSG_CHILD_IMAGE).
rpmsg samples are listed in RF5340 Protocols and use cases.

Use git to fork the nRF Connect SDK.
Then change one of these to do what you need the custom netcore application to do.

Ah, that link seems to have compared the forked repo with the current main 4 months ago. So understandably a lot of files have changed.

After researching this a bit, I found that the order is indeed the issue.

Then I asked some of my colleagues, and it turns out that you are not the first one seeing that the multicore sample builds in the wrong order.

See NCS 2.0 custom child image + mcuboot build

As far as I know, there are no configurations you can add to the sample to fix the build order.

For a workaround, I suggest that you do either of these:

Sign the net core hex file manually using Imgtool and add it to dfu_application.zip manually.
Fork the nRF Connect SDK to add a netcore image in the same way as for example zephyr/samples/bluetooth/hci_rpmsg is added when CONFIG_BT is set.

May be I found the issue but not solution.
So wihen we use hci_rpmsg example as network core, it first configured netcore and then mcuboot. But when we use our own network core firmware as attached smp_svr.zip, it first configured mcuboot and then netcore.
But as per nrf/modules/mcuboot/CMakeLists.txt, cpunet_signed_app_hex should be set first and so netcore image is not signed and not added in dfu package. Here is code snippet,

If my understanding is correct and issue is correct, can you provide guidance to correct the sequece of the configuration.

You are right on two accounts:

Firstly, I should have been more clear about my "seems to work here".
What I meant is that I could see that dfu_application.zip is generated.

Secondly, I see now that dfu_application.zip only contains app_update.bin, so it will not update the network core.

I will keep on looking into this.

Thanks for the reply. Yet I am not sure what is working at your end. I think still there is gap in understanding. Let me share example code with more explanation and expectations.

Here is my updated smp_svr example. In default example, I have added logic to use my custom netcore firmware (same as multicore)

devzone.nordicsemi.com/.../6518.smp_5F00_svr.zip

Now, after building smp_svr for ble, I can find two binary files inside build/cpunet/zephyr as shown below,

Now, when I try to update network core using zephyr.bin or signed_by_b0_app.bin, I am getting below error,

And also image is not included in dfu_application.zip which is found inside build/zephyr/.

My expectation is to have upgradable bin file which I can provide for update and also the same file should be included inside dfu_application.zip.

Please let me know if you have any query for my issue or expectation. Please share your suggestions or updated smp_svr code to accomplish my expectations.

Try to add the following to your prj.conf (of application)

CONFIG_BOOTLOADER_MCUBOOT=y
CONFIG_NRF53_UPGRADE_NETWORK_CORE=y

I tested this on nrf/samples/nrf5340/multicore, and it seems to work here.

My question may not be clear. When we build NRF5340, it gets NCS hci_rpmsg sample application as network core.
I would like to get rid of it and so I added multi image build in my application code base which add child image as my own network core applicaiton.

I am able to do it but custom network core application (which is inside application code directory) binary is not available in dfu_package.zip.
So my question is while adding child image, how we can specify binary name and path of child image. Also how we can add it inside zip.
