If you do not do that, the bootloader will validate the application as faulty and will therefore start the device in bootloader mode. There is a fourth hex file available on <a href="https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/question/22056/combining-sd-dfu-and-application-hex-and-programming/?answer=22246#post-id-22246">this thread</a>, the app_valid_setting_apply.hex, that you can merge with the other three in order to validate the application and make the bootloader start it.</p><div style="clear:both;"></div>
