&lt;p&gt;I do not have this specific flash device, but I tried setting up the nRF52840 in spi mode with the mx25r64, and it booted without errors.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Q1: Have you&amp;nbsp;scoped the SPI pins to see if there&amp;#39;s something strange happening during the bootup in mcuboot?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Q2: Have you tried moving your changes to a minimal project, like hello_world, to see if the same issue happens there?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I disabled spi1 &amp;amp; spi2 in mcuboot and preformed a clean build unfortunately no change in the output.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The external flash is powered by a supply independent of the microcontroller. Other GPIO are in use for some sensors but these have been disabled while I debug this issue.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;When changing the DT or adding child-image files, it is very important that you fully re-generate the build (ie. delete the build folder).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This is to ensure that the build is picking up newly created files.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I see from the .config, that you have several SPI instances enabled in mcuboot:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;CONFIG_NRFX_SPI1=y&lt;br /&gt;CONFIG_NRFX_SPI2=y&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;You can disable these by adding this to the mcuboot board overlay:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The BOOT_MAX_IMG_SECTORS is given in 4k blocks (flash page alignment), so 116 should be enough for a size of 0x74000. The warning printed is a catch-all message, indicating that there&amp;#39;s a generic error in the communication in the mcuboot child image.&lt;/p&gt;
