I asked Nexum if this was possible and got this reply:

I can join am Ellysis sniffer trace if needed.

While I can sync with the VOCE broadcast, I cannot receive audio properly.

I think the reason is that nRF53 controller doe snot Manage a BN value of 2 in combination with an iso interval of 20ms.

Since SDU interval is 10ms, it should receive 2 SDU frame every 20ms.

However the controller is only sending one SDU frame every 20ms. so half the audio is missing.

I have try to reproduce the same behavior with a nRF broadacster, using the BT_HCI_OP_LE_CREATE_BIG_TEST command (instead of BT_HCI_OP_LE_CREATE_BIG).

I am able to reproduce the same (bad) behavior as soon as I set the BN value to 2 and iso interval to 20ms.

Can you confirm this is an issue? or that it is actually a working configuration and I have done something wrong in my setup?

At this time, I can't receive or send data to VOCE successfully by the way. still working on that. might contact them.

If you have a new controller version that fixes this issue I will be happy to test it :)
Which audio controller do you use?
not sure if I understood the question, I'm using the nRF5340-Audio-DK with I2S and onchip hw codec, and the LC3 software.

I do not have a sniffer, only using the nRF5340 to debug the incoming data, and trace trough the parsing functions.
Could you specify these sync parameters in ISO Receive?
ISO Receive is coded with both BIT(0) and BIT(1), however i can change it in the code to only select one of the streams. The same crash happens when selecting only BIT(1) and trying to sync with VOCE. however, both settings work nRF5340 to nRF5340.
Could you provide more information about the sound? How is it disturbed?
it is hard to explain. It sounds like there is a lot of noise and the actual audio is played in the background, the audio is also distorted, like it is passed trough a bad mixer. The debug printout gives warnings of duplicated audio package and troughs every second frame.

I will try to clarify a bit.

I created a new application in VSCode trough the nRF Connect extension using SDK version 2.2.0. I selected the nRF5340_Audio example and have used that as a baseline for modification.

I only used to ISO Receive example as reference since it provided me with more information about the advertisement data.

I think the issue I have is regards to the synchronization of the BIS streams. I see that the I2S and the LC3 codec handles stereo, and that both channels is sent in the stream. However in the sync adv data it only specify on channel (as nRF5340 can only play mono on left channel). And the difference between VOCE and nRF5340 is that the channels is specifyed per bis in VOCE and set as a common configuration in nRF5340, this is specifyed in the sync adv data.

Hope this clearyfies a little :)
hakved_vea said:

I assume that some of these differences is handled by the LE Audio implementation, can you help me point out the differences that is not supported by the example code?

Could you please rephrase your question?
I have noticed from the LE Audio specifications that it is highly configurable and flexible and how to connect to broadcast source is specified in the advertisement data. So my question is, does nRF5340 Audio support all possible configurations sent in advertisement data?

I assume that some of these differences is handled by the LE Audio implementation, can you help me point out the differences that is not supported by the example code?

I see that VOCE specify channel allocation per bis, while nRF5340 sets it globally, I think my main challenge is with the synchronization of the channels

I see this comment on line 339 in broadcast_source.c

	/* NOTE: It is also possible to have the codec configuration data per
 * BIS index. As our API does not support such specialized BISes we
 * currently don't do that.
 */

alos at line 264 in broadcast_source.c

	/* TODO: The following encoding should be done for each subgroup once
 * supported
 */

is this something that you are currently working on?

I have been working with the nRF5340 Audio example, and made the changes described above in the files regarding that example. I only tested ISO receive to compare the two source codes.

The nRF5340 Audio DK is only receiving a mono signal, while VOCE is broadcasting a stereo, when syncing to both channels I think the audio is mixed into the one mono channel and half of the packets gets duplicated reject. When listening to songs I can recognize the song playing, however it sounds broken.

I see that from the terminal printout that:
nRF5340 have define Channel allocation: 0x1
while VOCE sets Channel allocation: 0x0
What implications does this have?

In broadcast_sink.c i comment out line 704 to 706

static bool scan_check_and_sync_broadcast(struct bt_data *data, void *user_data)

	/* Stop parsing */
	return false;
}

and in le_audio_bis_headset.c i comment out line 185 to 188 and returned true

static struct bt_audio_stream_ops stream_ops = { .started = stream_started_cb,
 .stopped = stream_stopped_cb,

static bool scan_recv_cb(const struct bt_le_scan_recv_info *info, struct net_buf_simple *ad,

// return true;
//	}

	return true;
}

It still works with two nRF5340 boards (one receiver and one transmitter).

When connecting to VOCE nRF5340 crashes when syncing BIG, in function

bt_iso_big_sync(...)

when comparing ISO Receive a nRF5340_Audio, there are some difference in sync parameters. The ISO Receive example does not crash in bt_iso_big_sync(...)

I programmed nRF5340-Audio-DK with ISO Receive example, the VOCE is set up as tx broadcast (BIS), this is programmed by NEXUM.

from the image above, I want to keep all I2S and audio functionality, then stream audio from the VOCE device to the headphone output jack port.

Best regards,
Håkon
