I found the problem. The new board wizard can corrupt the SDK. I'm not sure the exact circumstances where it happens but it's easily fixed by updating the SDK from nRF Connect for Desktop.

Seems to compile here, though I used v2.2.0 (since v2.2.0-RC1 is a release candidate and not recommended for development). In addition I deleted the build folder and added 'int a = 3, b = 4;' in start of main().
