We are planning to use ESB to communicate in-between nRF52 devices in a public environment. NB: our product only embeds the ESB stack - no bluetooth nor BLE tasked is performed by the nRF52 device. - The product will be distributed worldwide.

RE: Certifications needed for ESB

vHi

I asked internally if there are any ESB specific certifications, but there are only the "normal" RF regulatories like FCC and ETSI that are relevant. Worth noting that it is pretty straight forward as long as you don't plan on using a power amplifier (PA) for your antenna. If you plan on that there will be some more complications depending on what TX power you use etc. You should also not use the lowest and highest number channels allowed by ESB library, as they are outside the allowed band.

Regarding the ETSI certification, this is something that is certified for a finished products, and not for a module/SoC like the nRF52. We did do a ETSI certification for the nRF52 DK for ETSI EN 300 328 v2.1.1, and the only difference between V2.1.1 and V2.2.2 is the receiver blocking test. Attached is the ETSI test report for the DK for reference: devzone.nordicsemi.com/.../3301.359526_2D00_01-Nemko-TRF-ETSI-EN-300-328-_2800_nRF52_2D00_DK_2900_.pdf

Best regards,

The only real difference between ESB and BLE as far as I know is the frequency deviation between symbols (radio modulation mode). The deviation is lower in ESB, so the 1MBPS nRF radio mode will likely not pass the FCC 15.247 6dB bandwith test due to a change in the test specification by FCC some years ago. If you make sure to always use 2Mbps this should be fine though, if not it needs to be certified under 15.249.

Regarding medical certifications, I'm aware of the FDA classification required in the U.S: https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/overview-device-regulation/classify-your-medical-device and the EMA regulatory in EU: https://www.ema.europa.eu/en/human-regulatory/overview/medical-devices

Best regards,
