With external flash & internal scratch I have been able to continue. The issue still occurs with external scratch, which would be more ideal for my use case. Currently, there is no further investigation but I will leave this thread open as if I have time I will investigate further and update the community on my findings.

Update:

USB power does not have to be removed. I thought that because RTT freezes. From investigation. RTT disconnected between slot changes i.e. MCUBOOT -> SLOT1 etc etc.

Update:

GitHub issue https://github.com/mcu-tools/mcuboot/pull/1597

Required update to latest version. With this update, External Flash with internal scratch works (so far, small update sample of 20 updates, will add more updates to confirm). External Flash & External Scratch still fails with the same logs
