Well, good news.

After uninstalling EVERYTHING that has to do with NRF, including Jlink driver,cleaning every NRF or Nordic key from registry manually, and reinstalling all, it seems to work. I can run a blinking LED,

What an achievement :-)

Unfortunately, I actually don't have a clue what was the source of the problem. I used brute force to solve it.

Since it looks like a problem with some driver, I decided to remove all Nordic and Seger software from the PC.

Then I clean all registry entries with Nordic, Jlink, nrf, Segger, then I will try to re-install all.

I am in the process; will let you know.

Sorry for the slow response on this one.

Have you had any progress on this on your end or is the status still the same?

It is hard to debug an issue related to a specific computer, but if you're still having problems I will try to come up with some other things you can try.

Here is a screen shot.

* Jlink is detected in Device Manger.

* nrjprog output in shell window.

* in VSCode - Connected Device, No device found, nothing happens trying to flash.

How does it fail on the non working PC?

Can you run nrfjprog -e or nrfjprog --recover successfully?
If not, can you share the log output?

What if you try to flash the code from VSCode, what happens in this case?
Can you share the terminal output?

What kind of PC is it?

Could you check the version of nrfjprog using the nrfjprog -v command, both on the working and non working PC?

If you don't have the same version you can download the latest version of the nRF Command Line tools here.

I have an update. The boards that "don't work" are actually fine. The problem is at the PC.
The PC at home, the one that I had to manually install Ninja, does not recognize the board (it does recognize the Jlink adaptor, but not DK) , but the same board connected to my work PC, works correctly. Any idea how to fix?

Yes. I have one same DK that works well, so my setting and IDE configuration is good, I am making progress in the fundamental course now, with all normal build/flush/debug options.

I have two other boards that are not detected as a Nordic device. I would like to have at least one of them working.

this is what I get from 1'st:

And the 2'nd is pretty much the same:

Does this mean that the NRF52 chip on the board is faulty?

If no, what can I do?

If yes, my options:

1. Use that board only as debugger/programmer for target board using P20

2. remove the chip and solder another chip fro a Thingy 52 I have laying around (risky, but I have the skill and tools)

3. any other suggestion?

You don't happen to have more than one to test with?

Could you try to run the following two commands from the command line and let me know what you get?

Well, after uninstalling all, and re install, the proem pressits. I gave up automatic install, and installed ninja manually according to instructions

Chocolatey: choco install ninja

Now I can build the sample code:

But the DK board is not detected. I can see it on Device Manager as Jlink, but not as DK:

Changed USB port and got this:

tried to "Recover Board", but unsuccessful.

If you open the ABOUT page in the Toolchain Manager you can enable verbose logging from there. Also remember to enable logging on the bottom right of the screen:

If you have more problems with the build in the future there is a function in the nRF Connect extension for VSCode that allows you to store different system information to a file that you can share with us. By using this it is easier to identify the problem, if it is related to your system configuration:

I was about to ask if you could reinstall with verbose logging enabled, but if you can install OK then this is probably not the issue.

I have seen issues earlier having the application on a different drive as the SDK.

Could you try it again by putting the application on the C drive also, or just try to build one of the standard samples in the SDK?

I typically store the SDK in a folder called c:\ncs\v2.x.x, and store projects in a folder next to it such as c:\ncs\v2.x.x_samples

well, looks like install was OK, but build has errors. Note my application folder is E:\MyWork\les1_exer1 , and sdk on c:\ncs. Is that a problem?

I am using Widows 10, 64 bits.

BTW, I just installed everything on another PC, same OS. installation completed, no issues. All looks OK.

Maybe I should uninstall everything and re-install from scratch.

(will not uninstall VScode, it's not an option as it is used for other development, mainly Flutter)

the popup window of checking dependencies never closes and is showing the rotating indicator forever, until closed manually.

Yes, it's a Visual Studio extension running on the Visual Studio free community version. I never tried Visual Studio on Linux or MacOS.

I understand your approach, and for myself, I try to move to VScode for better support, which I hope will not be needed after me passing that learning curve.

When you open VSCode with the Nordic extensions installed you should see a window similar to this:

As long as the nRF Connect SDK and nRF Connect Toolchain boxes are populated the toolchain should be working.

This is Windows only I assume?

Personally I am a Windows user, but from the Nordic side we focus on tools that work on all major platforms.

If you have some more specific examples I am happy to take your input. We are continuously working on trying to make our tools more user friendly, and have dedicated engineers working on the VSCode extension for the nRF Connect SDK.

One of the more recent additions is a graphical interface for configuring GPIO's, serial buses etc, to make the process of configuring the hardware easier.

Yes, I installed through NRF connect desktop-> toolchain manager.

Note that my IDE using VisualGDB on Visual studio works fine, no issues.

I wanted to follow the course exercises to the letter, so I try VSCode as well, where I have that issue.

I will find ninja.exe, probably need to add manually to PATH, will look at this later today.

BTW If you have an hour to spare, I recommend trying to download and build a project with VisualGDB, it is not a free tool (but not expensive), and have a trail period of 30 days, it is very impressive and so much easier to use, as it does all the configuration heavy lifting automatically, easy build and debug etc.

Did you install the nRF Connect SDK through the Toolchain manager?

Where on your harddrive did you put the SDK install?

Please note that the default environment for the SDK is Visual Studio Code, not Visual Studio.
If you try to build examples in Visual Studio I would expect build issues.

I already found that course, trying to install it all on VScode (I regularly use VisualGDB extension for Visual studio).

can't get it to install and it looks like it can't find Ninja, what am I missing? ( My apologies, but I spent over an hour on this)
