Here is the trace log.

I am using the iBASIS eSIM card which is sent together with the thingy91.

After some more tests, I found three operators covering my place, and it is the 24007 which is tele2 always activates the PSM.

PLMN	operator name	PSM
24007	tele2	OK
24008	telenor	NOK
24001	telia	NOK

So as you said, it could be the roaming agreement.

But, where can I find the roaming agreement for iBASIS?

I cannot open your PSM_not_activated trace file. Could you take the trace again?

Which SIM card do you use?

Regarding your issue, it might be that the roaming agreement between your network operator and SIM card provider does not support PSM or that your device actually connects to some other operator than Telenor Sweden which might enable/disable PSM mode differently.

Could you please provide a modem trace for both cases - when PSM/eDRX is enabled and when PSM/eDRX is disabled?

Network determines whether PSM and eDRX will be granted or not. It is unlikely that the network would provide PSM and eDRX after it previously did not provide it, though it might be possible during tracking area updates.

When I say enabled, I mean I can get LTE_LC_EVT_PSM_UPDATE and LTE_LC_EVT_EDRX_UPDATE events from the modem, which has valid values.

Please correct me if I am wrong, the application can enable and disable the PSM and eDRX, but whether it is actually enabled or disabled is only controlled by the base station, right?

And when the thingy91 fails to enable the PSM and eDRX the first time after it boots up, will it try to talk with the base station and enable it later?

While writing a question to iBASIS, I found this iBASIS coverage spreadsheet (updated April 5th, 2022)

So it is confirmed that eDRX is not supported in Sweden yet.

Hi,

Technical specification TS 124 008 describes that the purpose of eDRX parameters information element is to indicate that mobile station wants to use eDRX and for the network to indicate Paging Time Window (PTW) length value and eDRX cycle value which should be used for eDRX.

We generally recommend developers to ask local network operator or Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) if they support eDRX. In your case, these would be Telenor Sweden and iBasis.
