I am not really seeing why you wouldn't be able to continue with the Onboard Programmer for now at least.

Any GND would do. You can use the GND pin here, or using the illustration from the documentation you've linked me to.

If you want to use the ST-link for this you're on your own. It might be possible to get it to work but it is not an nRF Tool and not supported by us. This might not make a difference, could you try doing this again without the ST Link and see if that works?

Ok. I connected the GND/3.3v to the ST-LinkV2 and the CLK/IO to the DK, which powers up the PineTime. I tried to flash it and got this in the terminal:

FATAL ERROR: board pinetime_devkit0 does not support runner nrfjprog

I'm just trying to use the simple ble peripheral example:

Here are the lines from the Terminal in VS Code:

-- west flash: using runner nrfjprog
To fix, configure this runner in /opt/nordic/ncs/v2.3.0/zephyr/boards/arm/pinetime_devkit0/board.cmake and rebuild.
FATAL ERROR: board pinetime_devkit0 does not support runner nrfjprog

I'm not sure how I need to configure. I did order the Seggar J-Link Plus (compact), but am not sure if that changes anything.

I do have a DK and Don J. pointed me to the fact you can connect using On-board SEGGER J-Link debugger/programmer, which I am trying to do now. I guess at some point a SEGGER J-link Programmer may be a necessity. The configuration challenges of the environment are significant for me. I am reading the Debug out for programming external boards now to see how I can connect it to the 4 PineTime connections.

Hello,

I believe the ST Link v2 is mainly for ST devices, though there might be a way for you to get it working with our devices.

What would probably be optimal would be to get a proper SEGGER J-link Programmer, though if those are too expensive you can also simply use the debug out of an nRF DK. I do not know a lot about pinetime though it seems you can program it using SWD. Do you have a DK?

As per documentation J-Link is required. Connected Devices View - nRF Connect for VS Code
