thanks for your pointer! However, I do not use nrf Cloud currently but a different MQTT broker / Cloud Infrastructure.

You are right, provisioning exclusively the intermediate certificate works as well as chaining intermediate + root cert and flashing it to the nRF9160. The problem was a bug in my provisioning script and the certificates on the nRF9160 were corrupted because of that.

Is there any particular reason you try to provision both the root and intermediate certificates at the same time?

This is not really the way the certificates should be used, normally you use just one or the other.
