CONFIG_BT_MESH_MODEL_GROUP_COUNT=1 in our project's build/zephyr/.config output file and also in all of the sample projects I built for testing. I set CONFIG_BT_MESH_MODEL_GROUP_COUNT=3 in our project's prj.conf file and this resolved the problem.

Could you check what BT_MESH_MODEL_GROUP_COUNT is defined as?

This option specifies how many group addresses each model can at most be subscribed to.

I had someone with an iPhone test this issue. He installed nRF Mesh from iTunes and the problem also occurs on his iPhone. Perhaps there is some setting on the iPhone to increase resources?

Hi Joakim,

I do not have an nRF52-DK, but I have a Laird DVK-BL652 which seems equivalent. The DVK-BL652 only has 2 LEDS (with reversed polarity) and only two user buttons mapped to different GPIO which I am not using. I built the nrf/samples/bluetooth/mesh/light sample project using SDK v2.4.0 with the selected board as nrf52dk_nrf52832. The project runs on the DVK-BL652 and the 2 LEDS can be turned on and off from the nRF Messh app on my Android phone. The Insufficient Resources problem still occurs. I have now tested this with 4 different SDK versions and on two different boards with no modifications to the sample project and this problem continues to occur. The only thing left for me to try is an iPhone instead of an Android phone. I will try to borrow one for testing.

We need elements to be assigned to at least 2 groups so that everything can be turned off with one control.

I am using the latest nRF Mesh app from the Google Play store, and noticed that it has been updated since I opened this ticket. Is your nRF Mesh app from the iTunes store or are you using a custom in-house nRF Mesh app?

I did not modify the sample project. I selected the board and then built the project as is.

I don't have an Android phone to test with yet. But I can ask our mobile developers if they know about any issues related to this.

Have you made any changes to the sample? Or is it the unmodified sample you are testing with?

I went through the steps using an iPhone and an nRF52-DK, but I was unable to reproduce. (Didn't have an Android phone or nRF52840 available when I tested).

I will try again tomorrow and see if I can reproduce.

Thank you for responding. The answer to you first question is yes this works as expected.

Here are the steps I followed to encounter the Insufficient Resources pop-up. I will post screen shots in additional replies because they don't look good inserted with the comments.

In Visual Studio Code, nRF Connect: Create a new application.
Select Freestanding, nRF Connect SDK 2.1.3, nRF Connect Toolchain 2.1.3, Application Template nrf/samples/Bluetooth/mesh/light, and Create Application
In Visual Studio Code, nRF Connect: No build configurations click to create one.
Select Board as nrf52840dk_nrf52840 and Build Configuration
Use nRF Programmer to program build/zephyr/merged.hex into nRF52840-DK
On Android phone, open nRF Mesh application (Screen shot to follow)
Select “+ ADD NODE” (Screen shot to follow)
Select “Mesh Light” (Screen shot to follow)
Select “Identify” and wait for LEDS on nRF52840-DK to finish blinking (Screen shot to follow)
Select “PROVISION” (Screen shot to follow)
Select OK
Bind key for each Generic On Off Server in the elements list (ie 0x0002 to 0x0005)
Select Element 0x0002 Generic On Off Server
Select Subscribe (Screen shot to follow)
Select OK (Screen shot to follow)
Select Subscribe again to add this element to another group
Select Create a new group to subscribe and name a new group (Screen shot to follow)
Select OK and observe the Insufficient resources pop-up. (Screen shot to follow)

Not sure if I fully understand what you are doing here. Are you trying to have a model inside the same element publish to several group addresses?

Please elaborate on you are doing (preferably step-by-step and with screenshots). Currently not able to reproduce, but I might not be doing the same as you are.
