When I go to a thread with more than a handful of replies the server only feeds me the first handful until I scroll to the end, and then it serves up another small handful of replies, and so on and so on. As a result it can takes a lot of keystrokes and time to get to the newest reply.
Is there a shortcut or hotkey (or better yet, a knob I could set in my user profile) that causes the server to serve up all of the replies in the thread without further interaction?
There are oldest / newest buttons to reverse the sort order.Have you tried that?
Thanks Eivind, I didn't notice it until you pointed it out. This longish thread has 32 replies and seemed like a good test case https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/f/nordic-q-a/37801/pc_ble_driver_py-exceptions-nordicsemiexception-no-ping-response-after-opening-com-port?ReplySortBy=CreatedDate&ReplySortOrder=Descending
It's an improvement when looking for answers but in a small way worse than the default ordering for lazy browsing because it doesn't load the older posts. This is with that 32 reply test thread and Firefox 61.0.2.
Best Regards, Howard
Intimidating and definitely confusing. Sort by newest seems useful only for getting to the very last post very quickly.
I agree, that would be the most useful aspect of it.But the problem' stems from the very concept of nested replies itself.
If everything was one flat sequence of posts, you would have a perfect chronology of the posts. But you would loose context unless everybody were absolutely explicit about what they were replying to (by using quotes etc.)
It's not that I want a flat sequence of posts but rather the entire thread dumped out at once. As it is now one has to scroll down/clock more, repeat, see if there are more posts, etc looping until the entire comment thread is revealed.
If the 'load next' button caused the forum software to dump everything it was holding back my needs would be met.
OTOH there are more important things in life. Please take this not as a fault assignment but rather a gentle suggestion.
Thanks Howard, still contemplating some essential improvements. But sadly, our ongoing performance challenges have to be pri 1 still...
Fun fact: It's possible to have a link to a specific post in a thread, by copying the link on the date stamp, e.g. the "2 months ago" label text.
If only I knew the moment of that specific post! Nevertheless a cool feature that appeals to my inner lawyer.
Even though I'd like to have my "show me everything" button now I can happily wait. In fact I specifically want to compliment you for the ongoing performance-side focus as good results there are going to make far more people happy than my silly button.
Thanks, Howard :)
