nRF51822 Development Kit + noob

This is my first dive into low level programming (coming from iOS/Android dev background) and wanting to create something similar to the BlendMicro from RedBear Labs.

I'm doing this as a learning experience and want to be able to have a bluetooth chip act as an iBeacon as well as be able to simple commands to it (like the BlendMicro).

I've ordered the nRF51822 Development Kit but see that I need the nRFgo Starter Kit to do anything with it. Before I shell out the $400 to get it, is this the right path for me to be going?

EDIT

I've powered the PCB antenna module without the starter kit motherboard. My question now is how to program it? All the examples i've seen go through the motherboard. I'm also trying to do this in the nRFgo Studio, is this the correct program? Or should I be using something else??
