s140 nrf52840 6.0.0-6.a

Hi Nordic Engineers!

I read the description of new SD s140 v6 and find a lot of good features.

A question 1, is this the next version that will be supported in the future ? May I try to use it in the current nrf52840 project ?

A question 2, when it's expected to adopt release version (not alpha) of nRF52840 SD intended for use in mass production ?

thx!

  • I don't see into Nordic internal processes and heads but as it is weekend (and you probably don't get the answer before Monday morning Europe time) let me guess: there is no production version of nRF52840 yet (although tools seems to be updated with Rev1 version already so it should be around the corner in-line with schedule announced by Nordic at nRF52840 introduction = release it by the end of 2017) and therefore also all the stacks are in alpha/beta stage. Once there is full revision of the HW available to public they will definitely also release the stack (usually max with 2-week delay). Now what version of stack you guess they will support? It's logical to assume that the latest/highest alpha/beta version. So I expect that S140 V6 will be released as pre-certified stack with nRF52840 production chip version and it will be maintained in the future.

As you can see from Nordic history they typically run one combo GAP role stack per chip variant - S130 for nRF51, S132 for nRF52832, S112 for nRF52810. With major feature updates - like adding L2CAP API, adding more concurrent roles, major rework of API etc. - they bump major version numbers of the Soft Devices. However they are trying to hold MBR version across all Soft Device releases for given chip so you can easily upgrade in the filed.

Finally as you can read on many instances of this forum Nordic support never answers questions related to unreleased products or roadmaps and time-lines. This is domain o sales&marketing which you can contact based on your regional or account manager. So I don't expect getting any answer to this one;)
