How to find the BLE5 distance between two NRF52840 chips?

I stumbled upon Nordics video on facebook where they show how to calculate the distance between two NRF52840 Dev Kits. Link to video and article: devzone.nordicsemi.com/.../

I have purchased several Dev Kits in hopes of being able to test this demo myself. I have done several of the other test demos such as using NRF Connect and the mobile application for the proximity demo and an even more simple demo of blinking lights.

However, I am struggling to reproduce the long range demo that the video represents. Any help, suggestions, or advice is greatly appreciated. I have read through a ton of documentation and downloaded different IDEs and software applications to create a connection to the chips, but Im not quite sure what to do next.

Well, you need to get the GPS modules from Sparkfun if you really want to reproduce this long range demo :) The distance calculation is no magic: the transmitter sends its own gps location to the receiver, and the receiver can calculate the distance based on its own gps data and the gps data from the transmitter.

Ha, duh, my bad. I have the GPS units but I was thinking of those more for a location tool, not using those to calculate distance. Complete oversight. Thanks for pointing me back in the right direction!

Interestingly there is an upcoming BLE webinar on "true x-y positioning" in an indoor environment using "angle of arrival and received signal strength" (pages.bluetooth.com/webinar-fathom.html). You may want to check out that webinar to see if there is something you can make good use of for your project.

Hi Matt,

is there any update with this Bluetooth Long Range demo from Nordic? I also want to do some test with nRF52840 and it's better when I can show the distance between two Dev kits.
