Can a smart phone discover a nRF51822 device without using Nordic app?

Hi All,

I just bought the Nordic Semi nRF51822 DK (without the starter kit). I tested the Heat rate monitor app and it worked fine. It could send some random values to the master control panel. I downloaded the nRF Utility app and verified the same with my smart phone.

My question is that whether the the nRF device can be discovered/ (made discoverable) from iOS/any smartphone's bluetooth settings?

Yes, as long as the smartphone supports Bluetooth 4.0, the nRF51822 device can be discovered/made discoverable for any iOS/smartphone.

But I just found this link, which says that Apple have chosen to let BLE devices only be discoverable from applications that can use them,

Yes, that's correct. If you want to see all BLE devices that are advertising in iOS, I will recommend using the LightBlue app.

Hi Kristin , Thanks for all your support. I was testing the app ble_app_hrs using lightblue app in ipad2. But I wonder how can I test bonding using the app? Is it possible ? or Can I use the iOS app nRF utility or nRF Toolbox to test bonding (flash write)
