21540DK how to set it up with high tx / rx power possible

I wanted to understand one thing.

It seems that configuring in my .conf file the following KCONFIG for 21540 in GPIO mode, allow me to work with a stable version of BLE

Stable means that discovery and service search is working properly, and I'm able to complete the connection establishment and changing MTU accordingly to my connection.

I suppose, as described somewhere on the docs, that connection PHY type is 1M.

BUT Changing to other values the TX_GAIN and RX_GAIN, or comnmenting them, seems to be quite the same thing in terms of power of the BLE signal.

So, using for example the central_uart example as a base starting point, and peripheral_uart as peripheral device, in order to set the high range possible with both 21540DK, what is the configuration to set up ? Are theese KCONFIGs right ?

  • Hi Enrico,

    By default the output power will be 0dBm. When the FEM have fixed gain, the output power of the SoC will be reduced to compensate.

    To set the desired output power you must use CONFIG_BT_CTLR_TX_PWR_ANTENNA.

    CONFIG_MPSL_FEM_NRF21540_RX_GAIN_DB shouldn't be changed, as the nRF21540 does not have configurable RX gain, the default value of 13 should be used.

    CONFIG_MPSL_FEM_NRF21540_TX_GAIN_DB_POUTA and CONFIG_MPSL_FEM_NRF21540_TX_GAIN_DB_POUTB should only be changed if the default TX gain settings for the MODE pin have been changed by writing to the uicr.

    In GPIO mode CONFIG_MPSL_FEM_NRF21540_TX_GAIN_DB should only be set to either POUTA or POUTB, if the uicr haven't been changed either 10 or 20 db must be used.

  • With you old settings you are essentially "tricking" the FEM driver to give you a higher output power, by telling it there is no gain from the FEM stage. This results in the driver setting the output power from the SoC to 0dBm thinking the final output power on the antenna will be 0dBm. In reality the FEM is adding either 10 or 20dB gain to the signal resulting in a higher output power on the antenna.

    With the correct settings the FEM driver will adjust the output power from the SoC and the TX gain of the FEM(if SPI is used) to achieve the requested output power at the antenna.

    Can you check the TXPOWER register on the peripheral devices with my suggested configurations. If I remember correctly your board is using a nRF52840, for this device the TXPOWER register address is 0x4000150c. You can easily check this using a debugger and nrfjprog:

    nrfjprog --memrd 0x4000150c

    Could you also share the nRF21540 devicetree node you're using?

    Okay, I flashed the software with the kConf you suggested me.

    About power emitted, with NRF Mobile app is clear that power is lower than "tricky settings".
    So, now I have to understand how to proceed to set everything okay.
