Purpose of nRF52840 on Thingy:91

Hi,

For the AWS_IoT and GNSS samples, do these utilize the nRF52840 for anything? Or is the nRF52840 acting only as a programmer/interface MCU? 

In other words, does the actual code in the samples run on the nRF52840 or on the nRF9160?

Hello Michael,

In general if you run the nRF9160 samples on Thingy:91 they run on the nRF9160.

In our infocenter you can see that:

For Universal Serial Bus (USB), Bluetooth , and Near Field Communication (NFC) passive tag connectivity, Nordic Thingy:91 uses a nRF52840 System on Chip (SoC). It is a powerful, highly flexible, ultra-low power SoC that incorporates a Bluetooth Low Energy radio and a 32-bit Arm Cortex-M4F CPU.

Please also take a look at the Connectivity Bridge application. It is what normally runs on the nRF52840 on a Thingy:91.

I would recommend looking at the Developing with Thingy:91 in general, there is a section about flashing firmware for both chips and our Cellular IoT Fundamentals course is made for both the nRF9160 DK and Thingy:91.
