nRF52832DK bluetooth antenna radiation pattern

Hi,

May I please know the approximate radiation pattern for the antenna used in nRF52832DK?

  • The nRF52 DK has s a λ/4 monopole antenna, so from theory you should expect a single doughnut shaped lobe, with field strength declining monotonically from a maximum in the horizontal direction, similar to the illustration used in this article. I suspect that the actual radiation pattern of the DK antenna deviates significantly from the ideal case, but unfortunately we do not have actual measurements of the radiation pattern of the DK specifically.

If you are interested in more details, you may find the λ/4 printed monopole antenna for 2.45 GHz white paper interesting.

  • Hi Einar, May I get the free tool that can simulate the distance, gain? What could be the effect of dielectric constant of multilayer PCB on the antenna parameters?

  • A change in the dielectric constant influences the resonant frequency. For example, a lower dielectric constant would result in a shorter antenna, and vice versa, requiring it to be tuned. (The printed quarter wavelength monopole antenna can be tuned simply by slight changes in length.)

Which free tool are you referring to?

  • By free tool, I mean the free simulation software that can show me the effect of dielectric, length of the antenna on the radiation pattern, directivity, gain.

  • Unfortunately, I do not have experience with any antenna simulation tools. Perhaps someone else on this forum has, and can make some suggestions?
