Meet the nRF54LM20A: More memory, more features

Nordic Semiconductor just announced the launch of nRF54LM20A, the latest addition to the next-generation nRF54L Series of ultra-low power wireless SoCs. This device offers more memory, up to 66 GPIOs and high-speed USB.

In this blog post, we will examine the nRF54LM20A and compare it to the rest of the nRF54L Series. We will also touch on how to get started with the new device, from nRF Connect SDK support to DevAcademy courses.

Expanding the nRF54L Series with nRF54LM20A

The nRF54LM20A expands the nRF54L Series with a high-memory option, featuring 2 MB NVM and 512 KB RAM, while maintaining the same MCU functionality with a 128 Arm Cortex-M33 processor, RISC-V coprocessor and enhancing the comprehensive peripheral set with high-speed USB and up to 66 GPIOs. It also integrates Nordic’s fourth-generation ultra-low-power 2.4 GHz radio, supporting Bluetooth® LE, Channel Sounding, Matter over Thread, and more. Like the other wireless SoCs in the nRF54L Series, the nRF54LM20A delivers twice the processing power, three times the processing efficiency, and roughly between 30 percent and 50 percent lower power consumption for common Bluetooth LE use cases compared to the nRF52 Series.

The diagram below shows the high-level architecture of the nRF54LM20A.

With the addition of the nRF54LM20A, the nRF54L Series now contains four SoCs. The table below gives an overview of the four SoC and their features.

Designed for demanding applications

The nRF54LM20A is designed for advanced wireless products across markets, including consumer, smart home, commercial, and industrial. Feature-rich MCU functionality, including numerous interfaces and peripherals, provides developers with design flexibility for multi-functional devices without compromising size, battery life, or power efficiency.

It is particularly well-suited for Human Interface Devices (HID), including gaming peripherals that require low-latency wireless connectivity and high-speed USB. It is also ideal for smart home devices as the 2 MB of non-volatile memory and 512 KB of RAM can fit a Matter implementation with ample overhead for the application without needing external memory.

Availability of development kits and samples

The nRF54LM20A is ready for development. We’ve opened the project-based early access program to enable access to the nRF54LM20A DK and samples. To apply for access, please fill out the form here nordicsemi.com/nRF54LM20A or contact our Nordic sales representative directly.

How to get started

The nRF54LM20A is supported by the nRF Connect SDK, offering a framework for developing low-power and secure IoT applications that can scale from simple use cases to feature-rich and sophisticated implementations. The nRF Connect SDK is based on the Zephyr project combined with Nordic software, bringing together the best of open source and ultra-optimized software with Nordic’s proprietary features and technology. This powerful package offers a no-compromise solution for developers to extract the most out of devices such as the nRF54LM20A.

The Nordic Developer Academy just released a new course, the nRF54L Series Express. Express courses are concise, self-contained learning modules with no prerequisites, designed to provide rapid onboarding on specific topics. The nRF54L Series Express only takes 2-3 hours to complete and requires no hardware or software. In addition, the nRF54LM20A DK is supported in the existing courses nRF Connect SDK Fundamentals and Bluetooth LE Fundamentals.

If you want to check out the nRF54L Series in general, the nRF54L15 DK (which can also emulate the nRF54L10 and nRF54L05) is broadly available at distributors and supported in relevant DevAcademy courses.

Closing

As we’ve explored the capabilities and features of the nRF54LM20A, it’s clear that it not only enhances the nRF54L Series with its increased memory capabilities and peripheral set, but also sets a new standard for power efficiency and performance in the IoT space.
