Hi, stupid question here: Is there a command I could send via the dfu characteristics that starts the application somehow with doing an actual dfu update? Using the secure bootloader from sdk12

Have you flashed the SoftDevice, Bootloader and Application to a NRF52832 and the device only enters the bootloader but not the application. If this is the case then you have not generated the bootloader settings page that indicates that there is a valid application, see appendix 1 in this blog post.
Yep, I have no problems with that. My problem is that sometimes our users accidentally enter bootloader mode and we just want to be able to send a command from Android/IOS to start the application instead.
Thank you, so I conclude from that there are no command to reboot or start application.
No, there is no command that does this in the Secure DFU Service. However, it is possible to modify the Secure DFU Service by adding another opcode that can be written to the DFU Control Point characteristic to implement a reset to the application, but I think that implementing the timeout is far easier.
