Being able to connect multiple smartphones to a BLE peripheral

We are designing a product that allows multiple users to connect their phones to the same peripheral device. I wanted to check it out with this example:

infocenter.nordicsemi.com/index.jsp

I compiled and flashed the example on my pca10056 but it seems like I can't see anything on my iPhone 6 running Lightblue. Am I missing something? Do I absolutely need an android phone or a BLE5 compatible device for this?

EDIT: I flashed my pca10040 dev kit with the precompiled softdevice s140 hex file from the 14.1.0 Nordic SDK.

I can see the device with BLE Tools, but performing a connect operation never completes. Is this normal?

No special requirement on the scanner/central side, it more looks like your app hasn't started at all. Have you tried pre-compiled HEX files from Nordic (coming in SDK)?
