Take a look at this Message sequence chart. When the central is disconnected, you should receive a BLE_GAP_EVT_DISCONNECTED event.

It's hard to say what could be wrong from the information you provided. When posting a question, you should include as much relevant information as possible. i.e what SDK you are using, which softdevice, what example you are working with, what you are trying to acheive and so on.
