Can BLE 4.0 devices support Numeric comparison?

We are using LG Nexus 5 (Android v 6.0.1) and nRF52840 PDK. Currently when IO capabilities on nRF52840PDK are configured to Keyboard and Display, the numeric comparison is initiated.

As far as I know, the Numeric comparison was introduced from BLE 4.2 onwards. (See blog.bluetooth.com/bluetooth-pairing-part-4)

The specifications of LG Nexus 5 states that it supports BLE 4.0.(see www.lg.com/.../lg-D820-Sprint-Black-nexus-5)

Is the numeric comparison tied to the version of Android supported or is it tied to BLE version?

Numeric comparison is only used in LE Secure Pairing (LESC), which was added in Bluetooth specification 4.2, so your device needs to support Bluetooth 4.2 to do LESC and therefore numeric comparison.
