nrf51 development WITHOUT MDK-ARM

This is my first time working on Nordic-made IC.

My previous experience is on PIC which has its own compiler (relatively cheap at 200$). I'm shifting to nRF51822 development kit and I recently read a document about development with GCC and Eclipse.

Do I HAVE TO use MDK-ARM (Keil) which costs over 4000$?
