Using ANT for proximity applications

Is it possible with Nordic NRF51422 to perform accurate proximity ranging to make sure that a circle of 2 to 3m but not more is identified in a reliable way? What is the accuracy for RSSI measurement or for proximity search?

Thanks for helping

  • Hi Lukas

I am sorry for the very late response to this thread.

The method for measuring RSSI level on nRF51422 with ANT stack is described here and at the bottom of this thread.

The RSSI measurement itself is pretty accurate, with 1dBm accuracy. However the distance is not very accurate since it relies on several environmental factors, i.e. if there are any obstacles between the nRF51422 and the transmitting device. Also, other transmitting 2.4GHz devices may influence the signal strength, WiFi, other Bluetooth devices, etc. It will also depend on if you are in a open space or not. The tuning of your antenna will also play a major role so you must calibrate your "RSSI to Distance" function for your device after you have tuned the antenna.
