Can I place the Smart Beacon into a receiver mode?

The nRF51822 chip has a receiver, so it can receive. You just need the software that implements it.

In general a beacon is a broadcaster, so it doens't receive anything, but you can have a look at the other examples in our SDK.

I'm interested in start a project which implies using a nRF51822 beacon as receiver. The project will be as following:

• I use a beacon as a transmitter (regular use) in every room of a building;
• I need a small size and low energy bluetooth receiver which detects beacon's ID's and forward them on a serial (pins)
• I also intend to use a beacon as receiver or other small module low energy from Nordic which can do this job I will study your SDK but any suggestions or advices from experienced users are welcomed. Thanks!

This is perfectly possible to do with the nRF51 or the nRF52. In addition to the examples in the SDK, I recommend you to have a look at the tutorials section above.
