nRF52820 antenna link to matching network

Hello, first post!

I'm building a wireless mouse with nRF52820, I have a doubt about the PCB trace that links the matching network to the antenna.

I'm using the antenna from the nRF52840 dongle, exactly copied.

See picture of my current situation (work in progress).

Should the linking trace be of a predetermined length/width?

For now I matched the width to the 0.8mm in the nRF52820 reference design(see below), and the length is what I need to put the antenna on the border of the pcb.

Does this look ok?

Thanks

  • Hi,

If the trace is within the ground plane there is no restrictions on the trace length, but we recommend keeping it as short as possible.

In this case where the trace is outside the ground plane it will act as an extension of the antenna, and in turn reduce the resonance frequency.

I would just extend the ground fill to this area to prevent the antenna getting longer:

I also recommend extending the antenna keep out area to these regions as well:

We can do a full design review when its finished, just create a private ticket and include the project files, schematic and layout. We can also help with tuning the antenna and radio matching networks.
