cannot download Programmer tool and nrfutil-device due to SSL certificate error

I am n the process of porting the NRF5340 BLE Audio example to the u-BLOX evaluation board EVK-NORA-B126 which uses this part on a module.
We are evaluating whether the 5340 can be used for an intercom service vis a vis audio quality/range by using the u-Blox module.

I am following the u-Blox documentation but basically trying to get the peripheral-uart app documented here:

• Getting started with nRF5340 DK — nRF Connect SDK 2.4.99 documentation (nordicsemi.com)

Steps are:

1. Install SEGGER JLINK V7.92K _x86_64(Oct 18 2023)
2. Install nRF Connect for Mobile
   1. nRF Connect for Mobile - nordicsemi.com
3. Install latest nRF Connect for Desktop
4. Install nRF Connect for Mobile
5. Install Connect Desktop app ToolChain Manager
6. Download SDK
7. Install Nordic Visual Studio extensions
8. Install Nordic SDK app Programmer
9. Use Programmer to write Peripheral app

Our hardware software setup is:

• x86_64, Windows 10
• Visual Studio Code 1.83.1
• BLE Audio 5.3
• target is NRF5340_XXAA_APP
• nRF Connect for Desktop 4.2.1
• u-Blox evaluation board u-Blox EVK-NORA-B126

  • The evaluation board has an on-board JLINK-OB for debugging

Steps 1-7 seem to work without problem.
Step 8 fails, with the following message. As a result we cannot run step 9

I then tried a manual install of nrfutil, verified command line tools were there, and so on.

The steps were:

1. Install nrfutil
2. nrfutil install device

Step 1 passes, step 2 fails with a similar error


I thought this might be a problem for other users as well .if there are SSL cerificate errors on your web site and saw that this is not the first time, e.g. (there are others)

Hi Raoul,

I followed up on your suggestion and connected to a completely open network. I still have the problem.

I do find it significant that I am able to Download the Tool Chain Manager and the RSSI Viewer without any problems.
It is when I try to download the Programmer that it fails. The obvious conclusion is that there is something about the sequence of actions in the Programmer install that is different.

What do you think?

This might be a silly question, but are your system time & date correct? The developers say that this could cause SSL certificate errors. They have tried to replicate your issue but were not able to trigger the same error.

according to my gps watch that is 15:19 on the same day UTC

So I think that is likely  not the issue

Do you keep any logs? I can try to reproduce the problem again and give you the date and time.
